Adams, Erikson, Leer, Crapser, Kummer, and Peters Winners At Eagle Valley
Week number two of the 2009 racing season at Eagle Valley Speedway saw Defending National Champion, Kevin “Buzzy” Adams picking up his fifth feature win of the season in the WISSOTA Modified division. In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Paul Erikson picked up his first-ever feature win at Eagle Valley Speedway and Matt Leer picked up his first win of the season in his WISSOTA Midwest Modified. Cory Crapser picked up his second win in as many nights by dominating the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Cody Kummer cruised to his first 2009 win in the Eagle Valley Pure Stock division, and Mike Peters won a hard fought victory in the Eagle Valley Hornets. With heat winner, Kevin Adams, starting on the pole, Mark Hanson next to him, and Mike Anderson and Craig Thatcher making up the second row, you just knew the fans were in for a spirited battle in the Modified feature. There was tough competition for second and third, but Kevin Adams took an early lead and never looked back in a feature that would see just one caution when Bryan Nayes spun coming out of turn one just after the completion of lap four. As Hanson, Anderson and Thatcher swapped places several times throughout the race, and Thatcher moving to second with just three laps to go, Adams set it on cruise control and took the win in his Barnyard Buddies Daycare sponsored Modified. The Super Stock division participants completed their feature race with just one caution as well, that one occurring just after lap three was completed when Darrel Hazelton spun coming out of turn one. Once racing resumed, pole sitter, Steve Hallquist, continued to lead as he had in the first three laps. Hallquist had it all his way for more than half of the feature, but Paul Erikson, who had started third, and Mike Keller, who had started second, were on the move and threatening with six laps to go. With just three laps to go, Erikson made the bid for the lead and passed Hallquist as they came out of turn two, Keller tried to follow, but his efforts were thwarted and he had to settle for third as Hallquist held on for second. Meanwhile, heat winner, Shane Kisling and the winner of heat one, Aaron Wilson, fought for fourth with Kisling being the victor for that spot. It was the first win of 2009 for the Kulas Body Shop sponsored Erikson and his first ever at Eagle Valley Speedway. After and winning his heat and starting third in the feature, Matt Leer was off to an early and dominating start in the Midwest Modified feature. This feature saw just two cautions, with the first occurring just after lap two when Wayne Dean, who had been running fourth, spun coming out of turn one, collecting John Moravec. Once racing resumed, Leer once again powered away from the field to once again lead with Ronnie Rihn, who had started third, and Mark Gerth, who had started eighth, fighting for second. Midway through the feature, the red flag was thrown when Brian Fuchs’ car went airborne coming out of turn one. The car slammed the wall and the car rolled onto its top. Fuchs was okay, but his car required assistance to be removed from the track. As the race continued, Leer once again took a commanding lead. Gerth took advantage of the restart and by lap ten had taken second from Rihn. Meanwhile, back in the pack, heat winner, Shane Halopka had worked his way up to fourth from his ninth-place starting position and heat winner, Mike Truscott, moved into fifth from his seventh-place starting spot. In the end, Leer took his first win of the 2009 racing season in his Johnson Logging- sponsored Midwest Modified. Adam Soltis was off to an early lead as he sprung from his third-place starting spot in the Street Stock division. The nice lead that Soltis had worked for soon evaporated, however, as heat winner, Cory Crapser, who had started fourth, grabbed the lead just three laps into the caution-free race. From that point it was all over but the shouting as Crapser dominated, stretching the lead as the laps ticked off. Soltis held on to second with his nearest competitor, Ron Hanestad, who had started fifth, five or six car lengths behind. Gary Kasperek who had started third, claimed third after dropping to sixth at mid-race and Butch Kummer settled in for fourth, while Danny Richards came home fifth. It was the second feature win for Crapser in as many nights as he cruised to victory in the Dave Running Construction Streeter. After winning his heat race and starting third in the Pure Stock feature, Cody Kummer shot to an early feature lead and never looked back. Kummer was never seriously challenged, but Simon Wahlstrom driving his brother’s car gave it a try for a few laps as did Zach Manley, who had started seventh and eventually finished second. Kummer took the win in his Vince’s Speed Shop-sponsored Pure with Manley in second; George Richards, who had started eighth, in third; Ron Hoffman, who had started sixth, in fourth and Tony Falkner, who had started ninth, in fifth. The best fought battle of the night occurred in the Hornet division where Mike Peters and Rocky Kempe fought tooth and nail for the lead almost all race long. Peters, who started second, took an early lead and led the first five laps. Kempe, who had started fourth, took the lead by lap six and led the next five laps with Peters racing him side-by-side. With just a lap to go, Kempe slipped up a bit in turn one and Peters took advantage, taking the lead and the win. Racing action continues on Sunday, May 17. Pits open at 4:00, cut off time is 5:30; hot laps are at 5:30, with racing beginning at 6:00. Come join the fun where the valley heats up! SUMMARY Eagle Valley Speedway Jim Falls, WI May 10, 2009
